1512692 Direct contact cooling of a gas SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 16 June 1975 [17 June 1974] 25539/75 Heading F4K In apparatus for cooling a hot product gas containing sticky particles which lose their stickiness on cooling by direct contact with a cooling gas, the hot product gas is prevented from contacting the wall of a tubular zone 2 of a collar 1 connected to a lower reactor for carbonaceous material (not shown) by a protective gas shield. The protective gas is introduced tangentially through inlets 5 in an annular channel 3 and the cooling gas is introduced radially as jets into the product gas in the zone through inlets 9, 10 equally spaced around the tube circumference downstream but adjacent the annular channel 3. The shielding and/or cooling gas may comprise particle-free product gas after cooling or consist at least partly of steam, and oil, soot or coal may be added to the cooling gas. Claims (3) [1] Claim 1. The method of cooling a hot gas product, mainly a product, is 15 holding sticky particles, including the supply of a cooling agent to the gas product stream and shielding gas along the walls of the cooling chamber, characterized in that, in order to prevent particles from sticking to the walls of the cooling chamber, the cooled and shielding gases are passed through a tubular chamber of constant cross section and create laminar flow of shielding gas. 25 ' [2] 2.
